Great Day at Lords

Held on: June 26th, 2009

Footwear Friends and Supporters spend a Great Day at Lords.

The date was 26th June and the weather was kind when over fifty supporters of our charity spent a wonderful day at the world's most famous cricket ground and, in doing so, thoroughly enjoyed each others' company, as well as the arrangements made for the day.

We met at the Lords Tavern for coffee in mid morning, followed by a welcome from the organiser of the day – Past President Gordon Smart – and his MCC Chairman colleague, Charles Fry (whose Grandfather was the legendary C.B. Fry) before breaking into two groups to embark on a two hour tour of the ground – escorted by hugely knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides.

A Great Day at Lords

At the close of the tour, an interesting half hour was spent at the Lords Shop before all concerned thoroughly enjoyed a marvellous lunch provided by Ali and his team in the Tavern, which is located by the Grace Gates. Time was not pressing and the party very much enjoyed mixing together, conversing on all manner of trade topics and entering the competition which centred on the outcome of the cricket which was to follow.

There was then time to either wander round the ground or the very pleasant areas of St. Johns Wood before settling down with their colleagues – existing and new – to watch Middlesex take on Essex in the 20/20 Championship match. For many, this was the first 20/20 match they had watched live and all said what a great spectacle the game provided. The Middlesex recent record in the competition had been very poor but, on this occasion, they performed well and put Essex to the sword. Great fun!

A Great Day at Lords

The day closed coming up to 9pm and all concerned headed home to spread the word on the glories of Lords and the hugely enjoyable day that Footwear Friends had created.

The charity raised nearly £3,000 on the day and wish to thank all those who supported them. It is hoped to run a similar event in 2010 and, already, applications have come in for this day. Please advise us if you would like us to keep you informed.
